Most conversations about LA GATOR start with tuition. For families with teenagers in Lake Charles, a better place to start may be the college down the road. Southwest Louisiana has two public colleges that enroll high school students in college-level courses, SOWELA Technical Community College and McNeese State University, and dual enrollment is one of the expense categories the LA GATOR marketplace recognizes.
That combination matters most for two kinds of families: those using the account in home-based mode, and those whose teen attends one of the area's smaller approved schools and wants more than the school can offer on its own.
What SOWELA has said about who can enroll
SOWELA has been unusually direct about this in local news coverage. In October 2024 the college told KPLC that its dual-enrollment classes are available to Louisiana high school students whether they attend public school, private school or are homeschooled, and that both online and in-person classes are offered, at participating high schools and at SOWELA instructional sites. The menu includes general education courses such as algebra, English, history and science, along with more than 30 career program options.
In January 2025, KPLC reported that students in the Calcasieu Parish School Board's Virtual Instruction Program could, for the first time in 2025-26, work toward an Associate of General Studies through SOWELA while still in high school. That particular program belongs to the public school system, but it shows how far the college's dual-enrollment offering reaches.
And in June 2026 SOWELA held a dual enrollment and homeschool information session at its main campus in Lake Charles, open to public, private and homeschool families. The college described its STEPS option, in which a senior attends classes full time, and pointed out that it is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, which is why its general education credits usually transfer.
McNeese
McNeese State runs its own dual-enrollment program for high school students. Admission rules, eligible grades and course costs are set by the university and can change from year to year, so the place to get them is the McNeese admissions office, not a third-party site. What we can say is that a Lake Charles family has two distinct public options: a technical college with a strong career-program side and a regional university with a traditional academic catalog.
Where the account comes in
LA GATOR can be used in one of two ways for a given student. A student enrolled full time at a BESE-approved school uses the account for that school's tuition and required fees. A student who is not enrolled full time uses the account in the Odyssey marketplace, buying courses, curriculum, tutoring, therapy, testing and dual enrollment from registered providers. Odyssey's own help pages list dual enrollment among eligible uses.
In practice that means:
- Home-based students are the most straightforward case. If the college's course can be purchased through the marketplace, the account can pay for it, alongside an online core program and tutoring. Our home-based page explains the one registration rule that trips families up.
- Students at an approved private school are already using the account for tuition. Whether a dual-enrollment course is covered by the school, billed to the family, or handled some other way is a question for the school's counselor and business office.
- In every case, the purchase has to go through Odyssey. The program does not reimburse families for anything paid out of pocket.
Why it fits this region
Southwest Louisiana's economy leans heavily on refineries, chemical plants and liquefied natural gas. The Calcasieu Pass LNG export facility in Cameron Parish, developed by a Venture Global subsidiary, began operating in 2022, and it is one of several large energy projects on the coast. Those employers hire for industrial and technical skills, and SOWELA's career programs teach many of them. The June 2026 session featured a former homeschool student who started at SOWELA as a STEPS dual-enrollment senior and moved on to its industrial instrumentation and electrical programs.
We are not suggesting that a dual-enrollment course leads to a particular job. The point is simpler: for a teenager who already knows they want a technical career, or who wants to bank general education credits before a four-year degree, the account can help pay for a step that used to come out of a family's pocket.
Which local schools teach the upper grades
Among the 13 approved schools in the five parishes, the ones that teach high school grades at scale are St. Louis Catholic High School, Bishop Noland Episcopal Day School and Hamilton Christian Academy, with Life Christian Academy approved through grade 10 and the small Indian Bible Academy in Allen Parish listed through grade 12. Our dual-enrollment guide lists them with enrollment and links to their profiles where we have one.
Questions to settle before registering
- Is this course open to my child, given that they attend a private school or learn at home?
- Is the college a registered Odyssey provider for this course, and will it bill the account directly?
- Will the course count toward my child's high school diploma, and who records it on the transcript?
- If my child is enrolled full time at an approved school, who pays for the course: the school, the family, or the account?
- Will the credit transfer to the four-year school my child is most likely to attend?
If you want help working out whether a dual-enrollment plan fits your child's account, an advisor can go through it with you. The LA GATOR 101 page covers the award amounts and the spring application window.
